FOLLOWING the desperate appeal to rehome 70 cats, a fundraising page has been set up in support.

Earlier this week readers were moved by the story of Denise Selway who was forced to close her animal rescue charity Vale Cat Rescue in Ebbw vale due to ill health.

Ms Selway, 56, who has always taken in sick animals since she was a little girl, said the decision is “heartbreaking” but she wants to see as many of the rescue centre’s 70 cats rehomed as possible.

Ms Selway weighs just six stone and said she needs to give her body time to heal.

But now a reader has stepped forward and created a Gofundme page to raise £2,000 to pay the bill.

So far the page has raised £250 from 18 donations since it was set up earlier this week.

On Monday (May 25) the Argus reported how Vale Cat Rescue, which has helped more than 1,000 animals since it began in 2009, will have to shut its doors after founder Denise Selway has suffered a series of mini strokes since last September.

The volunteer-run charity, also has an outstanding vet bill of £2,000 and is lacking funds to continue its work.

It works in Newport and Abergavenny and operates a trap, neuter and release programme, with all costs covered by donations.

Anyone able to offer a home to a cat or kitten is urged to get in touch with Vale Cat Rescue on 01495 524882.

There are also five rabbits available for adoption.
