THE new mayor of Caerphilly county borough launched his charity appeal this week – raising £3,900 in one evening to bring the total fund to £6,158 after just one month in office.

Cllr Leon Gardiner hosted the launch event at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters Penallta House on Wednesday July 1, where he announced the charities he would be supporting during his year in office.

The two charities chosen by Mr Gardiner are Ty Hafan, which provides comfort, care and support for life-limited children and young people, and Macmillan Cancer Support, which provides a wide range of services for people with cancer and their families.

Mr Gardiner, who represents the Argoed ward, said: “I am thrilled with the level of support shown at the launch of my charity appeal, and I would like to express my thanks to everyone who attended and helped raised this fantastic sum of money.

“Ty Hafan and Macmillan Cancer Support are two very worthy causes, and this contribution will help support the valuable work these charities carry out.

“There is a number of fundraising events and activities scheduled throughout my year in office, and I hope that we can build on this fantastic start to my fundraising.”
