A NEWPORT teenager had her dreams come true as she was taken to her school prom by horse drawn carriage.

Crystal Vassallo, 16, had been besotted by horse drawn carriages after a trip to Disneyland earlier this year, and was given the chance to ride in her own thanks to the efforts of her parents.

Maes Ebbw School pupil Crystal, as well as her friend Leah Bailey, were taken on the two mile ride to their school’s prom at the Hilton hotel in Newport on Friday evening.

Crowds came out on to Hawthorne Avenue to catch a glimpse of the horse drawn carriage before it left for the school prom.

The carriage was led by eight-year-old Dutch Friesians, Diplomat and Director, who both starred in the Nanny McPhee film.

Proud dad Joe Vassallo said Crystal was delighted with the horse drawn carriage.

“It’s like a fairytale come true and she loves it,” he said.

“When she first saw them she was overwhelmed.

“I thought she was going to burst into tears.”

Mum Debbie McNamee organised the horse drawn carriage.

“I just wanted something different,” she said.

“I thought it would be nice for her big day.”

Maria Bisset, from Bed Ford Carriages Ltd, said they were usually hired for weddings, funerals and film productions, but over the last few years there had been an increased demand for proms.
