TWO VALLEY choirs will perform together at a fundraising concert in aid of a charity set up by the family of an Abergavenny soldier who was fatally injured in Afghanistan.

The Pontnewydd Male Voice Choir and the Cwm Male Voice Choir, featuring Benjamin Powell as soloist, will perform at St Mary’s Priory Church in Abergavenny next week to raise funds for the Welsh Warrior (the Richard Hunt Foundation) The charity was set up in 2009 in memory of Private Richard Hunt. Pte Hunt was the 200th solider to lose his life while serving in the 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh in Afghanistan and died on August 15 aged 21.

The charity aims to provide grants for anything from specialised equipment to short breaks for Welsh service personnel and their families and to raise awareness of those servicemen and women injured physically and mentally.

Pte Hunt’s mother, Hazel Hunt, who founded the charity said: “The foundation is working to aid those who have been injured in the course of their service to this country, to ensure that they have the correct help at the time that they need it, from the right people able to give it.”

“We are also working to make sure these brave servicemen and women are not forgotten now that the Afghanistan War has officially ended.”

“We, as a country, are facing an uncertain future as far as global terrorism is concerned and we rely on our Armed Forces to protect us and defend us in our hour of need, it is only right and fair that we should ensure that those injured or bereaved are able to live a normal life once they are back in civilian life.”

“We are proud to carry on with Richard's legacy of ''being there' for his mates, but are only able to do this through the enormous generosity of the general public, so please come along and enjoy an evening of fantastic music and voice that will most certainly be uplifting.”

Tickets are £7 and available on the door. The concert takes place at 7pm on July 25.
