A CORONER has ruled the death of an 'amazing' father - who died after he was hit by a van on the A449 - as accidental.

Robert Thomas Madden, aged 44, who was originally from Tredegar but lived in Cardiff, died on February 1, after a collision with a Mercedes Sprinter Van at around 5.40am on the A449 near Raglan.

The inquest into his death was held at the Gwent Coroner's Court, sitting in Newport, on Thursday. The court heard that Mr Madden was travelling in his car along the A449 from Raglan to Usk when his car left the road and smashed into a fence.

Coroner David T Bowen said Mr Madden got out of the vehicle after the crash and started to walk along the southbound carriageway.

Mr Bowen said Mr Madden was avoided by a Citroen but was then hit by the van.

He said: "Why he was walking on the carriageway is a matter of conjection. It is likely based on the evidence I have heard that he had become dazed and disorientated.

"In that daze he wandered on the carriageway not fully realising what he was doing."

A post mortem examination carried out by a consultant pathologist concluded that Mr Madden had died as a result of multiple injuries.

His family - in a tribute at the time of his death - said they were "absolutely devastated".

"Words are not enough to explain just how much, he was an amazing Dad, devoted partner and just a wonderful person, everyone who knew him loved him, we are left with a void in our hearts that will never be filled," the tribute added.
