THE assistant head teacher of a Monmouthshire primary school who was alleged to have ‘glassed’ another woman in a bar has had the case against her thrown out.

Laura Welsh, deputy head at Magor Church in Wales Primary School, appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with one count of assault by beating, which she had strenuously denied.

The 37-year-old, who lives in Chepstow, had been accused of ‘glassing’ Callie Williams on a night out at the Mythos Greek Bar in Chepstow earlier this year.

Newport Magistrates' Court heard how the bar had been busier than usual on the night of February 21 because Chepstow Racecourse had held races earlier on.

The defence claimed that any injuries caused to the complainant had been accidental.

The defence barrister on behalf of Miss Welsh also claimed evidence presented by the prosecution, and their witnesses, Callie and Laura Rowlands, was so “tenuous” that the case could not continue any further.

The magistrates agreed, and told Miss Welsh that she was “free to leave” before the defence began their case.

After she was found not guilty by the magistrates, Miss Welsh - who had been suspended from her job at the primary school as a result of the incident in February - told the Argus: “It’s been an extremely stressful six months because I’ve not been able to carry out my job as a teacher and assistant head – something I’m very proud of.

“There has been a lot of things said that aren’t true about the case. I find it unfortunate that I haven’t been able to tell my side of the story completely – but it just shows the weakness of the case.

“It speaks volumes about the strength of the evidence that it has been thrown out before I even had to give evidence.

“I want time to process what’s happened but I’m hoping to go back to the job that I love soon.”
