A 44-year-old man who fell off George Street Bridge was in a 'stable' condition when he was taken to hospital, police have confirmed.
A spokesman from Gwent Police said: "We were called at about 7pm as a 44 year old man had been on the wrong side of the railings and had fallen off George Street Bridge into the water.
"SARA was on the scene and got the man out of the water. He was taken to hospital for treatment and was stable."
UPDATE: 7.20am, Friday
SARA Beachley & SARA Newport Lifeboats were called out to a report of a man who jumped from George Street Bridge in Newport at around 7.15pm last night.
Sara Crews worked with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service to recover the person and hand over to the ambulance service.
Also working with Chepstow Coastguard Gwent Police.
UPDATE: 9.23pm
A Gwent Police spokesman said the man has been taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

A MAN jumped from Newport’s George Street Bridge into the River Usk this evening.
Firefighters and police were called to the river. The man was pulled out at about 7pm.
A Gwent Police spokesman said he was unable to confirm the man’s condition.
And a Wales Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed there is an ambulance at the scene but was unable to give any further details.
