TWO sisters aged six and eight who completed the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge just two months ago have set another challenge – this time to save Ebbw Vale Scouts.

Caitlin Winpenny, five, and her sister Ella, eight, from Ebbw Vale, climbed Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan with their pet parrot in 24 hours in June.

Now the Willowtown School Pupils are planning another climb up Pen y Fan in the dark in a bid to raise money for Ebbw Vale Scouts group which is at risk of closure.

The scout group’s building needs £15,000 to begin repair work so Hannah Welsman, mum to Ella and Caitlin, has helped start a fundraising campaign.

The adventurous sisters have now challenged four scout leaders, one of whom is partially blind, to walk up Pen Y Fan in the dark to reach the summit for sunrise.

On September 20, scout leaders Kevin Norris, 38, Paul Williams, 42, Heather Jayne Llewelyn, 21, and Daniel Cummings, 23, will be taking the challenge.

Ms Llewelyn, who is registered partially blind and with limited walking experience, is hoping the challenge will help her overcome her fear of her disability.

Mum Ms Welsman said: “My girls and I have stepped up to help the group raise awareness and funds because if the group closed and we did nothing, it would be a very sad day.

“It is no secret that teaching children values and responsibilities while they are still young, goes a long way to producing healthy adults; the Scout leaders are committed to serving this end.”
