A CAMPAIGN group say an event to raise awareness of their efforts in establishing a walkway station in Magor with Undy was a success.

The Magor Action Group on Rail (MAGOR) hosted the event with the support of Monmouthshire council today at the council offices in Magor.

The group gave a presentation on their vision for the walkway station and were joined by around 35 people throughout the day.

The community group have been campaigning for more than three years to re-open a railway station to serve the joint communities of Magor with Undy.

Paul Turner, member of MAGOR, said: "It was really good. We had around eight entrepreneurs there who were very supportive and said they would want to be more actively involved with us. They can act as a catalyst for us to approach the bigger businesses who can put pressure on the Welsh Government.

"The event was very encouraging and we have a lot to follow up on."

The group have recently consulted with a company who have priced a feasibility study in the region of £25,000 to £30,000 and not £40,000 as they were originally quoted. This feasibility study will determine how viable the station would be.

They already have the support of Magor with Undy Community Council who have pledged £5,000 and have the support of Monmouthshire council, the Severnside area programme board, various local businesses and many residents of the communities.

Jessica Morden Labour MP for Newport East was in attendance and John Griffiths, Labour AM for Newport East, voiced his support for the campaign.

He said: “There is a clearly a strong local appetite for a station at Magor. The village has an ever-growing population, and almost half of its residents travel to work outside of the area.

"I am really interested in the potential of the station as a community hub, and the way it could link Magor and Undy with the South East Wales metro system."

Mr Griffiths added: “Great credit must go to the dedicated volunteers at the Magor Action Group on Rail who are driving this campaign forward – they are passionate local people with a strong vision for integrated transport in the Severnside area.”
