UPDATE: 8.20pm

A 'DANGEROUS and manipulative' Gwent man is beginning a 24-year prison sentence after committing more than 40 sexual offences against two victims, including 14 rapes.

Christopher Nevill, aged 44, of Maeshafod, Blaina, caused substantial and permanent damage to his victims through “a terrible litany of abuse' said Judge Martin Fitton QC.

Newport Crown Court was told both had suffered depression, one developed a dependency on alcohol and drugs, their relationships had been put under stress, and one felt so sullied by what Nevill did, they had to shower eight times a day.

Nevill was found guilty of 26 out of 27 charges, by a unanimous verdict following a trial in August.

These included 14 counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault, and counts of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13.

He was found not guilty of inciting a child to watch a sexual act.

Nevill had already pleaded guilty to a further 16 charges including taking indecent images of children.

While admitting the sexual acts took place, having recorded them with a camcorder, Nevill maintained both victims consented, though he felt 'guilt for what happened' and knew 'it was wrong'.

As part of the trial process, both victims had to watch those recordings, causing them considerable distress.

Prosecuting counsel Caroline Rees, who said during the trial that these recordings acted as 'trophies of his abuse for many years', read statements from the victims describing the impact Nevill’s offences had and continue to have.

Both have suffered flashbacks since watching the recordings and said what Nevill did had affected every part of their lives.

Judge Fitton said Nevill’s offending represented many years of 'serious sexual crime'.

“I take the view that you represent a substantial risk of further offending of a sexual nature in the future,” he said.

Calling Nevill “intelligent, articulate and highly manipulative”, he added that having heard him give evidence for two days during the trial, he had formed the view that Nevill had no remorse for his actions.

“It seems to me that you have no real moral compass and no real understanding of the barriers of proper behaviour,” said Judge Fitton.

“I do not regard you as a man who understands the true meaning of empathy, and you do not understand the damage you have done (to your victims).”

Judge Fitton sentenced Nevill to prison terms ranging from 24 years –- for one of the rapes –- down to 16 months years for the offences of which he was found guilty, and to which he pleaded guilty, all to run concurrently.

Attached to the 24-year sentence is a six-year extended licence period during which Nevill could be recalled to prison if he re-offends.

He will also be placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

Judge Fitton also recommended that a transcript of Nevill’s evidence to the jury be made available to any authorities, psychiatrists or psychologists who are charged subsequently with assessing his dangerousness.

A BLAENAU Gwent man has been jailed for 24 years after he was found guilty of a string of sexual offences, including several rapes.

Christopher Nevill, aged 44, of Maeshafod, Blaina was sentenced at Newport Crown Court earlier today after he was found guilty of 26 of the 27 charges against him after a trial last month.

These include 14 counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault, and sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13.

He was found not guilty of inciting a child to watch a sexual act.

The jury, made up of six men and six women, took four hours and 45 minutes to come to their decision.

Although Nevill had pleaded not guilty to these 27 charges, he had already pleaded guilty to a further 16 charges against him, including taking indecent images of children.

In total, there were 43 charges.

During the eight-day trial, which ran from August 3, the court heard how the charges related to offences committed against two victims over many years.

While admitting that the sexual acts took place, having recorded them with a camcorder, Nevill maintained that he had the consent of both of the victims despite feeling “guilt for what happened” and knowing “it was wrong”.

Prosecutor Caroline Rees said these recordings acted as “trophies of his abuse for many years”, with Nevill having already groomed his victims and attempted to educate the pair with new sexual experiences.

She added that this began with words and actions before escalating into sexual activity that included bondage gear and sex toys.

The first victim said that Nevill was “violent” when it came to sex.

She said: “I wanted it to stop. He was saying I was denying it and was enjoying it just as much as him.

“He told me to shut my eyes and put a gag on me so I couldn’t see anything. ”

The first victim added that on another occasion, Nevill forced her to drink a litre bottle of rum “so that it would relax me”.

She was then sick and begged him to call an ambulance. Instead, she said Nevill gave her a glass of water before raping her.

With the second complainant, she said on the first occasion he sexually assaulted her, Nevill told her that there was nothing to worry about and to “shut her eyes” and say nothing.

She added that she was never in a position to give her permission, saying "I didn't say anything. "When it was happening I couldn't speak. I never consented."
