FOOTBALL fans donated more than £2,500 as they lined up pound coins in the street for Newport County AFC.

The fundraiser came after supporters jointly took control of the league two club last week.

They started placing coins between the Riverside Tavern and the Ivy Bush on Clarence Place ahead of the Newport County clash against Exeter City at Rodney Parade on Saturday.

The cash could be used to launch a fund which could pay for players on loan, according to Newport County fan Richard Pearce, of The Smile Council, who helped to organiser the street fundraiser.

Mr Pearce, 50, said: “Some people gave more than £1. The landlord of the Riverside Tavern donated £100. This was the first £100 we put down.

“This continued after the game. It was people walking by, people who had gone to the food festival. It was very busy.”

The line of coins didn't quite stretch as far as the Ivy Bush but money is still coming in including cash raised by Ivy Bush landlord Dave Went through a raffle.

The funds are being donated to the Newport Country AFC Supporters’ Trust.
