LAST week we featured a picture of The Carnegie Library and Corporation Road Elementary Schools.

The road in the foreground is Corporation Road with Milner Street branching off beyond the library and Hamilton Street is just in the bottom right of picture.

Carnegie Library first opened on March 14, 1907, which was pointed out by one of our readers.

The Corporation Road Elementary Schools are still open but they are now referred to as St Andrew’s Junior School.

This is Carnegie Library on Corporation Road.

I think it might be the opening of the library.

There is also Corporation School but I think its St Andrews School now.

I attended that school from five years old to 11 years old.

When I was in the school the boys were in the top and the girls were at the bottom. I lived opposite the school for many years.

I can name many of the shops going along e.g Luckets the coblers, Palmers green grocers, Clydes, Rowlands fish shop etc.

From what I recall there was also the Corporation Hotel.

Jean Joseph, Cwmbran This is Corporation Road’s Carnegie Library which was opened to the public on the 14th of March 1907.

The photo looks to be the official opening ceremony.

There were 16 public libraries in Newport, one has closed, several are facing either an uncertain future or reduced opening hours.

Dave Woolven, Newport Today’s picture is Canagie Library in its early days.

An outstanding part of the bottom end of Corporation Road.

Jim Dyer, Newport The ‘then’ photo is the Carnegie Library.

The Corporation School was right next to it. I lived opposite the school.
