A CWMBRAN horticultural project stands to win a grant of £120,000 after reaching the final of a national competition.

Urban Buzzz will plant trails of wild flowers between Northville and Southville to showcase the story of the town’s transformation from rural fields to a thriving community.

The plan is part of the Grow Wild project, a mass participation programme supported by Kew Gardens and the National Lottery.

“We launched the event with the planting of snowdrops and crocuses by children from our partner school,” said Andrew Nevill, team leader of environmental projects at Torfaen Council.

“We believe this can do wonders to enhance the community spirit of Cwmbran.”

The competition is judged by a public vote, which closes at the start of November, and Cwmbran is up against projects in Cardiff and Ebbw Vale to claim the grant.

“We are the underdog in this competition given the size of the other finalists at Cardiff and Ebbw Vale,” said Mr Nevill.

“We have already beaten plans from Cardiff City Football Club, Haverfordwest Port and Newtown so we are hopeful of doing well in the contest.”

Cwmbran’s Urban Buzzz is a partnership across Torfaen including Maindee Primary School, Llantarnam Grange arts centre and many others.

A range of activities are planned for the project including TV and radio interviews, a rap song and social media campaigns including a flash mob.

Communities in Northville and Southville were asked to submit their designs for the wild flower and artistic installations to promote their area through plant life.

“This is a great chance for the young people to learn more about their heritage and the history of Cwmbran while bringing a sense of pride back into the community,” said Danielle Aicardi, 32, of Wayfield Crescent, Northville.

Cllr Jessica Powell, of Isca Close, Northville, added her support for the project, believing that a new lease of life into the communities.

“Northville has been a bit neglected and the chance to brighten the area up will have a big impact on how people see the area around them,” she said.

To vote in this competition, submissions can be made up until midnight on November 1 at votewales.growwilduk.com or by calling 0808 228 7201.
