A FIRE crew from Abergavenny have raised money for charity by climbing the equivalent height of Everest.

Starting at 9am on Saturday, a crew from Abergavenny Fire Station set about their ladder climb challenge at Abergavenny Town Hall to try and climb the height of Mount Everest- which stands at 8,848 metres above sea level.

Their aim was to cover the height by 4.30pm in a relay between the 15 crew members.

The firefighters climbed in one after the other, entered the building and rang a bell.

But they smashed their time target and completed 1,000 climbs by 2.30pm.

This is the second year that they have held the challenge and this year it will raise funds for the Firefighters Charity.

Watch manager Neil Skelton, said: “We were faster than we predicted as we worked a little harder to beat the time.

“If we raised £2,500 for the charity, we will be really happy.”

In the Evening at Abergavenny Rugby Club there was a bingo night, raffle and an auction to help boost the fund.
