THE secretary of the Islamic Society of Wales has been left ‘frightened’ after anti-Islamic graffiti was sprayed on two mosques in Newport on Tuesday night.

The messages – one of which reads “Islam is demonic” - were daubed on the Jamia Mosque on Stow Hill and the Islamic Society of Wales Mosque on Victoria Road.

It comes just a week after the secretary, Mubarak Ali, led a multi-faith peace vigil in the city for the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks.

A total of 130 people were killed in the attacks and the Islamic Society of Wales were quick to condemn the actions of ISIS.

Mr Ali said graffiti had never been smeared on the mosque since they purchased the site of the former United Reformed Church in 2008.

He said: “Some sick individual sprayed that message on our mosque and also the Jamia Mosque on Stow Hill. I was a little bit frightened, it’s not welcome.

“I don’t understand them, they are just evil. This person or persons don’t help - this is not going to spoil our good relations with the general community.

“At the end of the day, peace will always win and these idiots will never win. We are going to carry on praying.

“We have done a lot of good work in the community and brought different communities together. They won’t win and I appeal to our members to stay calm and not do anything silly.

“Hopefully the police will catch whoever these persons are.”

A spokesman for the Jamia Mosque declined to comment on the incident.

Ian Thomas, 50, from Blackwood, who is a member of Unite Against Fascism, offered to scrub the graffiti off the mosque but this is being handled by the council.

Speaking about the graffiti, he said: “I wouldn’t say I’m shocked but disappointed. This is how some idiots react to what’s going on.

“I remember, probably going back 10 years ago with the Iraq war, racists left a pig’s head outside another mosque.”

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said the force are treating the incident as a hate crime and arrangements are in placement to remove the graffiti.
