Charles Lemin, the driver of the Volvo, remains in Prince Charles Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The two other women travelling in the Yaris were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, where they remain with serious injuries.

The road was temporarily closed but is now fully open,

The woman who died in a two-car crash near Blackwood this morning has been named as Mavis Lemin.

The 70-year-old, from Blackwood, was a passenger in a Volvo S40 which crashed on the A4048 in Markham at about 10.30am.

Her husband, Charles Lemin, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, including broken ribs, their grandson, Calum Lemin, said this afternoon.

Mr Lemin was taken to the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

The A4048 between Railway Terrace in Hollybush and Penylan Road in Argoed has now reopened.

A WOMAN has died after she was involved in a two-car crash near Blackwood this morning.

The 70-year-old was a passenger in a Volvo S40 which crashed on the A4048 in Markham at about 10.30am.

The driver of that car was taken to the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

Two women in a Toyota Yaris, which was also involved in the accident, were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, police added. The driver of that car has serious leg injuries.

The A4048 remains closed.
