NEWPORT County AFC manager hailed a fantastic team performance as his men sunk Luton Town 3-0 at Rodney Parade but there was no mistaking that super sub Oliver McBurnie was the star of the show.

The striker enjoyed a dream debut as he came off the bench to fire his side to victory with a stunning 23-minute hat-trick.

The 19-year-old only arrived on loan from Swansea City on Thursday and he made himself an instant hero with the County fans.

McBurnie’s treble earned his new side a first three points at home in League Two since Luton last visited in March and Sheridan was delighted with his new boy but keen to share the praise around.

“Oliver will get the plaudits but I thought as a team we played very well,” said the Exiles boss.

“We had lots of energy and tempo about us and anyone who’s watched us will think Newport are a good team.

“Oliver got three good strikers goals and he was in the right place at the right time.

“I always make substitutions to come on and change the game and thankfully they did that.”

McBurnie replaced Zak Ansah on 58 minutes and broke the deadlock five minutes later after a cross from fellow sub Tommy O’Sullivan, on loan from Cardiff City.

The Scotland under-21 international added his second on 79 minutes when Luton goalkeeper Mark Tyler couldn’t hold on to Alex Rodman’s fierce drive.

And he completed his hat-trick four minutes from time when the third Exiles sub Scott Boden passed to him in space in the box and he rolled the ball into an empty net.

“Oliver’s a bit different to what we’ve got,” added Sheridan.

“He’s a box player and he’s got that height.

“His first goal looks easy but it wasn’t; it’s a great ball in but his finish is delightful.

“The second is a proper striker’s goal, he’s gambled and followed it in.

“The last goal was very unselfish of Scott (Boden) to give Oli his hat-trick but I am pleased because it’s a great debut for the kid.”

The win extends County’s unbeaten run to nine games and takes them seven points clear of the bottom two and Sheridan was pleased to have finally given the home fans something to cheer on a wet and wild afternoon.

“I don’t look what went on before,” he said.

“We’ve played alright at home but I am pleased for the supporters because full respect to them for coming in these conditions but they will have enjoyed that.

“There’s confidence in the group, it’s an excellent performance against a good strong team.

“The players are giving me what I ask from them and they are getting used to me.

“Once we are safe I will be smiling a bit more because I don’t want to be looking over our shoulders.”
