LAST week we featured a picture of the Newport Rialto situated on the High Street. The gap to the right is Station Approach. The building to the left of picture is the Tredegar Arms Hotel.
THIS is the corner of Newport’s High Street and Station Approach. The Rialto corner was demolished to make way for Lloyds Bank (long since closed). The small lean-to cabin was a shelter for the cab drivers. Off to the left of the photo was the Tredegar Arms Hotel, Dunn’s the hatters and outfitters and the Murenger House public house.
The Station Approach led to the fine Great Western Railway Station with its imposing semi circular booking hall. Number 55 High Street used to be Bodles Teeth. On the opposite corner of Station Approach were the Savoy Buildings with the Savoy Café and next to it was the Post Office, the façade of which still stands.
