Three new retail units in a prime location in Blackwood town centre are available to rent – on the site of the former Somerfield store, which closed its doors back in 2007.

The Class A1 units, located within The Market Place Shopping Centre in Blackwood town centre are currently being marketed by EJ Hales, and are available from 2,248 sq ft to 10,938 sq ft, available as a whole or combined, for retail or leisure use. The site also offers 160 free car parking spaces.

Cllr Ken James, cabinet member with responsibility for Regeneration said: “We know that Blackwood offers a unique blend of national retailers and smaller independent outlets, and these three new retail units, available for rent in a prime location within the town centre provide a real opportunity to further enhance the shopping offer.

“Footfall and visitor numbers to Blackwood remain fairly consistent despite the difficult economic times, and we know from experience that a number of businesses that have chosen to make Blackwood their home are thriving – including independent retailers and the Maxime Cinema. I would encourage anyone who may be interested in finding out more about these retail opportunities to get in touch with either the retail agents or the council’s town centre management team.”

Owen Cahill, from property agents EJ Hales, said: “The reconfiguration of the former Somerfield will provide three new retail units with free car parking to the front. The landlord is investing significantly to rejuvenate the derelict store which will have a positive impact on the Market Place Shopping Centre and Blackwood itself. Interest to date has been positive and we are hoping to announce an exciting new letting in part shortly.”

Huw Edwards, chairman of the Blackwood Retail Partnership and owner of Tidal Stores, said: "The former Somerfield site is an ideal business opportunity for prime retail property situated in the heart of Blackwood town centre, one which is not to be missed. Blackwood benefits from the highest footfall in the county, a wide range of independent and national shops, weekly markets plus a five-screen, multi-cinema in the High Street. Blackwood town centre consistently punches above its weight and this new opportunity will be an additional feather in our cap, one which many other towns would love to have.”
