PEOPLE are 'taking their hats off' on social media to reveal who they think is the 'kindest person in Newport'.

The heart warming #HatsOffNewport campaign is encouraging local traders, politicians and residents to don their favourite hat and talk about the kindest person they know in Newport.

In the videos posted to Facebook and twitter, participants “take their hat off” to their chosen person and nominate others to do the same.

As a result of the campaign, supported by Newport City Homes, several inspiring stories are emerging about people and communities, producing a feel-good atmosphere in the lead up to Christmas.

Communications manager at Newport City Homes, Jess Roberts, was “excited to hear about the lovely people who are going the extra mile to make others happy.”

She said: “We love to see people talking about the people and stories that make Newport great.

“Inspired by the recent popularity of the ice bucket challenge, we thought the #HatsOffNewport campaign would create a similar chain reaction.

“It is a great way to celebrate the real people who every day make life in Newport better.”

Dean Beddis, who runs Kriminal Records in Newport’s Indoor Market, nominated Benji Webb for providing a “positive representation of Newport” in the community and music scene.

The music store owner also nominated tattoo artist Kevin Lloyd and Newport councillor Chris Evans.

Cllr Chris Evans, of Rogerstone Ward, also made his own #HatsOffNewport video, taking his hat off to “very good friend” Jon the Newsagent and reminding viewers to support independent traders.

He nominated South Wales Argus editor Kevin Ward and assistant editor Nicole Garnon to take off their hats, alongside Newport Council leader Bob Bright who is “a great wearer of hats” according to Mr Evans.

Ryan Hiscott, of Alacrity UK, Helen Reynolds of Social for the People and John Burns, of Newport, were also amongst the first posting videos online.

Newport City Homes is encouraging people to tag their posts with #HatsOffNewport and make their posts publicly searchable in order to be eligible for a prize.

Five lucky winners, chosen at random, will each get £50 worth of shop local vouchers to spend on produce available from the city’s independent retailers.
