WORK continued to replace two busy road bridges in Newport over the weekend.
Last week a giant crane arrived to start extensive non-stop work on Cardiff Road Bridge from Thursday night until today, Sunday, December 27.
Also over the same four days the bridge at Somerton Road was also demolished.
The two bridges are being replaced by Network Rail as part of electrification work.
On Cardiff Road, the work was scheduled to continue day and night through the Christmas period. Network Rail said it had to take place then because no trains were scheduled to run.
Current arrangements along Cardiff Road will continue with traffic lights maintaining one lane of traffic passing over the bridge.
The work on both bridges is expected to last until late April 2016.
At Somerton Road, a temporary footbridge has been placed near the bridge to link Collingwood Road and Hawthorne Avenue.
The new bridge will replace the current one with a wider footpath and a straighter road.
