A NEWPORT mother of five who took time out of her own Christmas preparations to serve food to the homeless has said the event was “amazing”.

Kelly Probert-Wilmott, 37, held an event to serve a Christmas meal to the homeless in Newport on December 22.

She said: “I had over 40 volunteers come forward to help and we all pulled together and it was amazing.”

She said that 51 people turned up to enjoy the meal, while further food was taken by the volunteers to homeless people who didn’t attend.

“It was hard work but worth it and all of the food went so nothing was wasted,” she added.

The event was planned to be held in the car park behind Newport’s Job Centre, off Talbot lane.

But due to the weather, The Salvation Army opened their premises so that everyone could be served inside.

Mrs Probert-Wilmott, from Ringland, explained that the team also gave out a gift bag containing useful items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, hat, scarf, gloves, socks and shower gel. Also 20 sleeping bags and thermal drinks flasks were handed out.

She said: “The event going well has just made my Christmas.”

She would like to thank everyone who donated, adding: “Special thanks to Vas Jabber, Chris in Windsor Castle, Toby Carvery and Gibbo chip shop.

“Also, all on Facebook that donated and all the helpers that made my vision come true. You have made a lot of people happy and I couldn't do it without you.”

She was also supported by Newport City Church pastors and carollers in making the event a success.
