MONMOUTHSHIRE council’s chairman Brian Strong has said that despite difficult times for local government there is much to look forward to and be proud of in Monmouthshire.

In his New Year message councillor Strong wished residents, organisations and businesses a Happy New Year.

Seven months into his term of office cllr Strong said he has been honoured to attend many functions and events which reflect the achievements and talents of Monmouthshire’s communities. He added that it has been a privilege to provide a warm welcome to those visiting the county.

Recalling the highlights, he said: “One of the council’s major priorities is education so naturally I was delighted to unveil the plaque at the official opening of Raglan’s brand new primary school in late October with the right reverend Richard Pain, bishop of Monmouth.”

“Earlier that month, I greeted six wounded armed forces veterans who passed through Monmouthshire on a 1,000 mile charity walk around Britain. Their will to succeed made such an impact that I was humbled by their determination.”

“Another moving occasion was a poignant recitation by one of our young students at a remembrance service in Llanelly Hill Village Hall."

Cllr Strong’s chosen charities are the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital and the Wales Air Ambulance.

He said: “I am proud to support these two wonderful organisations and I hope that funds raised during my year of office will provide much-needed facilities and enable them to continue their good work.”

Looking ahead he said: “Construction of two new secondary schools has started in Caldicot and Monmouth, our residents ensure that our recycling rate is among the best in Wales, we look forward to the coming of the National Eisteddfod in Abergavenny this summer, the council has resolved to support refugees fleeing the horrors of war in Syria, while the role of the county’s many volunteers makes a positive contribution towards our quality of life.”

“Finally, I sincerely hope you have enjoyed the festivities and you look forward to good health and prosperity in 2016.”
