MOTORISTS and bus users travelling to Brynmawr and Abergavenny on the Heads of the Valleys Road face further disruption until April.

The western side of the Glanbaiden Roundabout at Gilwern was closed to traffic at the end of last year and re-opened over Christmas.

This week both the west and eastern side of the Glanbaiden Roundabout at Gilwern closed to traffic to allow Costain Ltd - the construction firm working on the £220million scheme to dual the A465 between Gilwern and Brynmawr - to build a bridge.

The road layout means that both sides of the roundabout will be closed until the end of April.

Traffic from Gilwern wanting to travel towards Brynmawr on the A465 is being re-routed to the Hardwick roundabout returning via the A465 back to Glanbaiden to continue to Brynmawr.

Similarly traffic entering Govilon from the westbound exit of the roundabout will be diverted back onto the A465 to the Hardwick and roundabout and then return.

Traffic entering Gilwern must go around a temporary roundabout near to the site offices and return to the Glanbaiden roundabout exit for Gilwern.

Stagecoach bus users in Govilon and Llanfoist who normally use the Route 3 and X4 bus between Brynmawr and Abergavenny will also be affected. Costain Ltd is funding a shuttle bus, operated by Stagecoach to provide a link from Govilon and Llanfoist to Abergavenny while to roadworks are carried out at Glanbaiden roundabout. The temporary service and roundabout closure will remain in place until April 30.

Work to dual the 8.1km section began in December of 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2018.

The design for the scheme includes a 50mph speed limit, improved junctions and viewpoints of the Gorge, extra laybys at Sale Yard and Clydach Gorge and a safer cycling crossing at Brynmawr and a split-level carriageway.

The scheme will link up with the Abergavenny to Gilwern and the Brynmawr to Tredegar stretches. When finished, it will provide a continuous dual carriageway between Abergavenny and Merthyr Tydfil.
