A COMMUNITY organisation is hoping to transform a former chapel into a hub providing “vital services” to Caerphilly county borough residents.

Based in the Libanus Chapel, Blackwood, Libanus Lifestyle hopes to use the space to host community events, respite care and drop in services for disabled and vulnerable adults.

The company was established in November and formed a management committee this January which includes councillor Leon Gardiner, the mayor of Caerphilly.

Once refurbished, the centre will also double as a museum, with borough memorabilia and other historical items being displayed throughout the venue.

Ms Karen James, of Libanus Lifestyle, has worked in the care sector since September 2008 and said she was “excited” at how many prominent people had offered their help and support.

She said: “I have always felt for the people we care for in the community and many people don’t get out and about because of the lack of transport and suitable events or venues.

“My partners can see the potential we have - not just the chapel itself - but the difference we can make to the lives of the people we will be working with.”

Cllr Gardiner said: “Since of the closure of the council offices in Pontllanfraith, a lot of organisations have had no place to go.

“But the word is already spreading around Blackwood and people are very excited about the centre.

“Karen is a wonderful person and credit to her staff and has worked very hard to get the centre where it is now.”

Ms James added: “We have the drive, commitment and enthusiasm as a management team to bring this project together - and to have a lot of fun on the way.

“With all the cuts and changes coming up with the council we have a big opportunity to take over the services they are trying to lose and hopefully limit the disruption to people.”

The group are currently having the building surveyed and plan to hold fundraisers for its restoration later this year.
