UPDATE: 6.55pm

GRAVES were underwater in Newport and sewage burst through manhole covers in Cwmbran as the aftermath of Storm Jonas hit Gwent today.

Parts of the cemetery at St Woolos became submerged due to the rain water, along with the amphitheatre in Caerleon.

William Graham AM for South Wales East described the scene in Cwmbran as ‘Venice on a hill’.

Monmouthshire County Council also closed a number of roads yesterday after driving conditions became a challenge.

The council has published a list of roads that are currently closed in the area, or routes on which motorists are urged to take caution on.

MONMOUTHSHIRE ROADS

The following roads are closed:

R113 closed between Llanllowell Bridge and Adrians cwrt. Deep water on road, stream has risen and will need to go back down before road is passable
R110 closed along most of its length from R113 to R108
R108 Newbridge on Usk near R110
They will need the streams, rivers and field water to reduce before they will passable with care

The following roads a passable with extreme care:

B4235 near Bridge Inn in Llangwm
B4235 near Gwernesney at Usk Show Ground
R75 near Usk Glider field
R71 1 mile south of Raglan

Other areas feature flood signs.

It should be mostly dry across Monmouthshire before it gets dark, but driving conditions will remain a challenge until fields dry up and river levels drop.

UPDATE: 2.38pm

The tea room at Llanyrafon Manor in Cwmbran was forced to close because of water-logged paths.

Julie Nelson, 53, who set up Raspberry Tea Room four years ago, said she took the decision to close the tea room after arriving this morning and finding the main pathway leading to the tea room flooded.

She said: “We had to close the tea room due to the terrible rain as we have too many flooded paths and it is not safe for the public.”

“Some water has reached the boiler room at the back of the property so we are being very cautious and won’t re-open until Thursday morning.”

“The rain seems to be easing but the river is still very high.”

UPDATE: 1.38pm

Rainwater was reported to have flooded across Henllys Way and through Henllys Village last night.

Sewage burst out of manhole covers at the junction of Coed Eva Mill and Ton Road, scattering effluent across the footpath and road and into the Llandowlais Brook.

William Graham, Conservative AM for South Wales East said: “Aware of the forecast of torrential rain as Storm Jonas moved across Wales, I raised the issue of flooding in Plenary (Tuesday 26 January); notably in areas where Welsh Water had not objected to further housing development”.

“Rain water is dispersed from our roadways by a drainage system that can be a joint drainage/sewage system. This results in overflows and sewage bursting from the system, as has happened over 15 times during 2015, at the junction of Coed Eva Mill and Ton Road in Cwmbran”.

“I was do not accept the answer given to me and I will be raising this issue directly with the Minister for Natural Resources. It is not acceptable that sewage should overflow onto our streets as often as this without action to remedy this problem”.

“I have concerns that further development is granted planning permission when there is evidence that the current drainage and sewage infrastructure is unable to cope with the existing housing”
