A DRIVER escaped with just minor injuries after his car overturned and hit three others in a narrow street in Usk.

Residents described how they heard a crashing sound before seeing people come out their houses to help at the scene on Old Market Street, Usk.

The crash happened at just after 6.30pm last night and emergency services were called.

The driver, an elderly male driver, was helped out of his overturned Mazda by some men and was looked after by residents until police, ambulances and the fire service arrived.

Mike Davies, who lives on Old Market Street, said: “I was upstairs and heard a crash and I thought the scaffolding had come down.

“I could see people rushing down the road. I had never seen so many people in the street, it was like New York!

“It’s a good job there was nobody walking up there. The car looked new. And it ran into the back of a black car which is now smashed to pieces.”

Resident Leah Beacham, of Usk, also came out her house after the crash.

She said: “It was outside the flats. The driver was quite elderly.”

Ms Beacham said the driver sat on the seat of her zimmerframe while they waited for the emergency services to arrive.

She said: “He seemed alright but had a few cuts. He was chatting as soon as he got out of the car.

“It’s dangerous down there, it’s very dark.”

A police spokeswoman said: “At approximately 6.25pm last night we received reports of a road traffic accident in Market Street, Usk, where a Mazda had collided with four stationary vehicles.

“The driver of the Mazda was treated for minor injuries at the scene.”

An ambulance spokesman said they sent a rapid response vehicle and an emergency ambulance to the scene.
