A GWENT MP is to chair a special meeting on the future of Wales’ steel industry in Westminster next week.

The meeting of the UK Government’s Welsh Affairs Committee, which is chaired by Monmouth MP David Davies, on Wednesday, February 10 will hear from representatives from Tata Steel, the Community trade union and business Minister Anna Soubry.

The steel industry in Wales and across the UK has been under serious pressure in recent weeks and months in the face of rising energy costs and an influx of cheap imports from China. In January Tata Steel it would cut 1,050 jobs, 750 of which would go at its plants in Llanwern and Port Talbot, with the remainder to be lost at plants in England and support roles.

Conservative MP Mr Davies said: "These job losses are another cruel blow for industry in Wales.

“It is important that we hold this session to understand what the future holds for steel workers in Port Talbot and gauge what support they are receiving at this difficult time."

The meeting will begin at 2.15pm and be streamed live at parliamentlive.tv.
