The only decision now is whether you stick with a traditional offering or opt for the American version.

Drago Lounge, Friars Walk, Newport

South Wales Argus:

Pancakes are an extremely popular choice among customers at this Newport restaurant and are served as part of the daily menu between 8am and 11pm.

Stacks are £6.25 and include several options, from streaky bacon and maple syrup to yoghurt, fruit and mixed berries.

As part of their Shrove Tuesday promotion, the eatery will serve lemon and sugar pancakes for £2.95 with a choice of chocolate sauce, golden syrup or maple syrup for an extra £1.

Deputy Manager Mark Jones added: “We have already sold two today out of our first four customers — they are really that popular.”

 

Sawyers Bar and Grill, Wales One Business Park, Newport Road, Magor

Although not strictly in the city, this is well known by many in Newport for its breakfasts and mighty American-style pancake stacks.

This Pancake Day, the venue is inviting the brave and the bold to tackle its mega stack challenge.

At £12.95 per person, the challenge must be completed in ten minutes and comes in sweet berry and savoury bacon options.

Regular portions are priced at £8.50 for a full stack and £5.50 for a half stack and the challenge will run throughout Pancake Day.

Bar Piazza, John Frost Square and Caerleon High Street

This Italian coffee shop has built a stellar reputation among customers from its two branches in Caerleon and Newport.

Although the cafe isn’t holding any special promotions for Pancake Day, its vanilla buttermilk pancakes remain a staple of the breakfast menu with a selection of toppings.

Choose from berries or banana and Nutella for £3.95 and add bacon for £4.95 and sausage for an additional £1.50.

The decadent treats are available from 9pm-5pm Monday to Friday and 10am-12pm on Sunday.

Coffee Thirst, Newport

Situated on the former site of the historic King William pub, the recently opened Coffee Thirst is a must for a those seeking a pancake fix — in fact it’s one of their specialities.

Inspired crepe dishes are created in three steps, starting with a base for £2.50 with individual toppings priced at 50p — ranging from crushed Oreos, Ferraro Roche and fudge pieces to mixed fruit.

Award winning ice-cream from Bridgend-based supplier, Sub Zero, can be added to the crepe dish for £1 and the result is simply sublime.

Parc Pantry, Bell Vue Park and Malpas

Ran by duo Mark Ellis & Ant Cook, Parc Pantry is somewhat of an Newport institution.

As part of the sit in menu at both branches, #BreakfastClub has an option of American pancakes.

There are no novelty shapes or superfluous toppings. The PP team are purely business.

Parc Pantry’s offering comes in the form of a buttermilk stack for £4 with options of fresh fruit yoghurt and honey or grilled bacon and maple syrup.
