A MANUSCRIPT and diary from the late-Lord Raglan’s library were among items sold at auction for over £167,000.

A first edition history of Barbados and a manuscript of a voyage to France were among 87 books sold on Friday from the former family home at Cefntilla Court in Llandenny, near Raglan by the Somerset-based auction house Lawrences Auctioneers on behalf of Lord Raglan’s heir and nephew Henry Van Moyland.

A Diary of a Journey in Central Arabia (1917) by Lt Col Hamilton sold for £1,400, more than six times the guide price. Hamilton was the political agent in Kuwait and the diary describes the journey from there, meeting with Arab leaders. His daughter Julia married the fourth Lord Raglan.

The first edition ‘A True and Exact History of the Island of Barbados, printed in 1657 by Humphrey Moseley, was expected to fetch between £400 and £600 but sold for £1,950. The was the second auction to be held this year following the death of the fifth Lord Raglan, Fitzroy John Somerset who died in 2010, aged 82.

The first sale was held last month and raised £59,000. More than 740 lots were sold across both auctions, with the book sale raising more than £40,000.

Richard Kay, director of Lawrence’s Auctioneers said: “The sale is now complete and we have had a very successful day. The library made over £40,000 and the day’s total was over £167,000.”

Lord Raglan’s great-great grandfather, Fitzroy Somerset, commanded British forces in the Crimean War and gave the order that resulted in the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade. Field Marshall Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle of Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War as well as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington died in Crimea in 1855. Cefntilla Court was bought by the Raglan Memorial Committee for the widow and descendants of the first Lord Raglan. The estate was sold by Mr Van Moyland last year.
