A TORFAEN school has received the highest award available from a national organisation devoted to physical education and sport practices.

Garnteg Primary School in Garndiffaith has received the quality mark from the Association for Physical Education (afPE), praising its methods of in-school teaching.

At present, the school is only one in Wales to have earned the distinction award from the organisation which monitors physical education across the UK.

Head teacher Sue Roche said: “This is a tremendous achievement and I’m delighted our commitment to PE and sport has been recognised.

“It is important that we teach our young people to have fit, active, healthy lives; the promotion of PE and sport is an integral part of this.

“If we can get our pupils enthusiastic about sport from an early age and stress the importance of staying active, they are more likely to continue this through into adulthood,” she added.

The school was awarded the mark in December last year following its introduction in 2013 and Garnteg will keep their distinction award status for a period of three years.
