A PONTYPOOL school is preparing to perform a modern version of a classic rock opera tonight.

St Alban’s RC High School’s cast of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ will take to the stage for a three-night run of Lord Lloyd Webber’s world-famous musical.

The story is based on the Gospel’s accounts of the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion.

Director Tracey Coleman wanted to take a more modern approach to the musical so that it would appeal to a younger audience so, rather than robes and loin cloths, the disciples will be in leather jackets and jeans.

Year 13 pupil Miles Harding, of Abergavenny, who is starring in the lead role of Jesus, hopes to go to one of the top drama schools in the UK to study musical theatre in September.

Fellow pupil Mia Gregory takes on the role of Mary, while Jacob Meehan from Year 11 will play Judas.

The cast have been working extremely hard since October when auditions were held are now excited to perform the production this week.

The production starts at 7pm and runs between February 11 and 12. Tickets are £7 from the school on 01495 765800.
