EMPTY bottles, cans and even a single bed were uncovered during a Newport community litter pick.

The pick was led by a group of nine to 14-year-olds called Shaftesbury Youf Gang, who organise projects to improve their neighbourhood.

They were joined by city councillors Paul Cockeram and Robert Poole, who represent the ward, representatives of Newport City Homes, and a number of parents, on Sunday.

Group co-ordinator and Gwent Police PCSO Richard Davies said: "Between 3 and 4pm, we collected 12 bags of rubbish, containing everything from empty beer cans and bottles to large plastic items.

"There was even a single bed dumped right outside the community centre, which we reported to the council.

"Everyone enjoyed taking part and the councillors were impressed with the lads' enthusiasm, while people passing on the street also acknowledged their efforts."

He added: "We are looking to do this regularly, and the next litter pick will be after our next meeting at Shaftesbury Community Centre, which starts at 2pm on March 20.

"It would be great if more members of the local community would join us and help improve this area."

Shaftesbury Youf Gang was formed last August and in the longer term aims to introduce more bins and a skate park facility in Shaftesbury Park.
