STOPPING on its new UK tour, Footloose at the New Theatre, is a musical that you can’t not enjoy.

Based on the original screenplay by Dean Pritchard, you watch as Ren McCormack (Luke Barker) moves from the city of Chicago to the rural backwater town of Bomont. In a town where there’s a law against dancing; all hell breaks loose when Ren disobeys their rules.

Joining Ren on stage is Willard played by Gareth Gates, runner-up in ITV’s Pop Idol in 2001, and now pursuing a career in musicals. He plays a quirky character who is meant to be a bad dancer; a role that’s a perfect fit. He has a great singing voice and watch out for him in a revealing scene in hot pants.

Also starring in this musical is Maureen Nolan, as Vi Moore, an experienced singer, actor and dancer who gives a strong performance.

Praise must go to the whole cast for their acting performances combined with undoubted skill as singers and musicians. They play a range of instruments from guitar to clarinet bringing a jazz feel to the musical.

The show is complete with superb dance arrangements, wonderful set designs and some classic 80s hits.

The show continues until Saturday.
