EIGHTY schoolchildren served more than 160 three-course meals at a pop-up restaurant this week.

Pupils at St Woolos Primary School in Newport served the meals to diners at their restaurant named ‘Hungry Heroes’ on Monday and Tuesday night.

The Year 1 and 1 pupils took on jobs ranging from waiters, to cashiers and entertainers for the evening, working one of two nights. They wore aprons which they decorated themselves and chef’s hats bearing their name.

Before opening the restaurant they turned the school into a film set to make their Hungry Heroes advert ‘It’s My Shout’, which is being screened at Cineworld in Friar’s Walk on Friday.

Diners, who included the Mayor of Newport Councillor and former pupil Herbie Thomas, footballer Nathan Blake was among the 163 diners to enjoy a menu devised by the children.

The menu featured melon, soup, French bread pizza and Spanish Spaghetti and gateaux or meringue.

The restaurant was the culmination of a Welsh Government creative project run in conjunction with the Arts Council of Wales that the pupils took part in over the past term.

They visited Nando’s, Bistrot Pierre and Drago Lounge in Friar’s Walk to find out about how restaurants are run and the food they serve.

Among the pupils serving was Rauls Savicka, aged seven.

His mum Iveta Savicka enjoyed the leak and potato soup.

She said: “It was a fantastic evening. I am so proud of him and to see what he has been learning at school.”

Heather Vaughan, headteacher, said: “This project has been a fantastic opportunity to immerse themselves in a series of experiences which have had a direct impact on their learning and confidence.”

“The project has involved the whole school community and the support from parents has been absolutely brilliant.”
