A BLACKWOOD playhouse is the first theatre in Wales to be accredited as ‘dementia-friendly’.

Blackwood Miners’ Institute received the status following several months of close partnership work with the Alzheimer’s Society in a bid to ensure the venue meets the charity’s standards.

Marina Newth, the theatre’s deputy manager, said: “At Blackwood Miners’ Institute, we believe that the arts should be accessible for everyone.

“The theatre provides a wide range of opportunities for people from all sectors of the community to take part and engage.”

The charity has provided advice, support and training to enable staff at the institute to become ‘dementia friends’ as part of the accreditation.

Ian Thomas, Caerphilly’s dementia friendly community coordinator, added: “Dementia Friends aims to help people live well with dementia.

“This requires taking actions in every sector of the community, as one of the hardest things for people living with dementia is the isolation and the feeling of inability to do the things they enjoy.”

“Venues like Blackwood Miners’ Institute will lead the way in supporting families living with the condition to enjoy cultural events and feel safe,” he added.

Councillor Ken James, cabinet member for regeneration said: “Blackwood Miners’ Institute is committed to ensuring that it is an accessible and welcoming environment to all visitors and I am delighted that they have become the very first accredited Dementia Friendly Theatre in Wales.”
