WARREN Feeney has agreed to play in Saturday’s Match for Life charity game at Rodney Parade after his Newport County AFC side take on Notts County in their final home fixture of the League Two season.

The Exiles boss will hope his players can wrap up three points before quickly changing into his kit to take part in the match for a celebrity XI against a Transplant Sport team.

The celebrity team will be captained by County coach and former player Michael Flynn and will also feature Feeney’s assistant Andy Todd, former player and now academy manager Byron Anthony and Newport’s ex-Olympic sprinter Christian Malcolm.

“Flynny just told me I’m playing,” said Feeney. “Obviously it will be tight because the kick-off is at 5.30pm but I think it’s massive and it shows you what the community wants to do.

“So I’ll probably dust my boots off. I’ll see how I get through training!”

Feeney last played in the Football League for Plymouth Argyle in 2013.

The former Northern Ireland international also played for AFC Bournemouth, Luton Town, Stockport County, Oldham Athletic, Cardiff City and Swansea City amongst others.

He finished his playing career with 15 games for Salisbury City, where he was player-assistant manager in 2013-14.

And he also made eight appearances for Linfield when he was manager at the Belfast club last season, scoring one goal.

The Transplant Sport team will be led by Simon Keith - the world's first person to play professional football following a heart transplant – and will feature players from all over the country who have received organ donations.

Former Wales rugby international and Newport Gwent Dragons prop Rhys Thomas, who is on the waiting list for a heart transplant, will be among those taking part on the sidelines to raise awareness of organ donation.

There will be free entry to the game after 5.15pm.
