A NEWPORT-based paediatrician who helped establish the Serennu Children’s Centre in the city in 2011 has been nominated for a national award.

Dr Sabine Maguire, long-time chairwoman and current trustee of the Sparkle Appeal, is one of three nominees for the voluntary and not for profit category at the Leading Wales Awards.

Thanks to her dedication, families receive all the support they need to care for their child, including specialist health provision and psychological support, at the centre in High Cross.

Commenting on her nomination, Dr Maguire said: “I am truly honoured and surprised to be considered for this award beside such leading figures in this area.

“It has been an exciting and challenging journey, working with families, trustees and colleagues in health and social care to realise our ambition of building a unique, award winning centre where children with disability can truly be supported to reach their full potential."

Donna Morgan, Serennu Children Centre manager, said: “Dr Maguire’s drive and leadership has never faltered through extremely challenging and changing circumstances.

“She should be very proud of her achievements over the last 19 years and more importantly, of the real difference she has made to the lives of disabled children and their families during this time."

Barbara Chidgey, chairwoman of the Leading Wales Awards, said: “It’s been a privilege to read so many fascinating stories of leadership making a real difference within a business, organisation or community project.”

The winners will be announced at the lunchtime awards ceremony, which will take place at the Hilton Cardiff on June 14.
