A POPULAR Grade II listed Monmouthshire hotel has been put up for sale.

The Royal George Hotel is described by estate agents as having a “rich and variety history”.

Some parts of the building date back to the 16th century and it has been extended and remodelled under its current owners, who took over the building nine years ago.

It is rated by the AA as a three-star hotel and is frequently listed in the top 20 of the Best Western hotels in the UK.

It has 16 bedrooms, a bar and a restaurant.

The hotel was listed as historically significant by Cadw and included on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest because is an early hotel developed in the late 16th century.

It was built as an ironmaster's house and had developed into an inn in the early 19th century as one of the early hotels in the Wye Valley. The tourist industry boomed there in the late 18th century.

John Coggins of Christie & Co’s Cardiff office, who is handling the sale, said: “The Royal George is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a profitable hotel in an incredibly sought-after location. Tintern has very special feel to it.

“The business enjoys excellent levels of trade and good levels of profitability, but has significant scope for new owners to push the business forward by growing room sales and developing the events trade, taking advantage of the special location.”

Christie & Co wants offers of £850,000 for the freehold interest in the hotel.

There are several other Grade II listed structures in Tintern. They include the signal box at the Old Station, The Anchor, The Bay, The Old Cider Mill and three tombs in the yard at St Mary’s Church.

St Anne’s House is Grade II* listed.
