THE chaos at the heart of Welsh politics would be funny if it were not so serious.

There was plenty of game-playing in the Senedd yesterday as Plaid Cymru joined forces with unlikely bedfellows the Conservatives and Ukip to deny Labour leader Carwyn Jones the role of First Minister.

Plaid leader Leanne Wood tied with Mr Jones in the vote to decide who will be the political leader of Wales.

Indeed, it was only the support of sole Liberal Democrat AM Kirsty Williams that stopped Ms Wood becoming First Minister.

For many watching on, yesterday’s events will have looked a bit grubby.

If Ms Wood had won the vote would she really have gone into a coalition government with the Conservatives and Ukip? We doubt it.

There was a sense of game-playing in the Senedd yesterday.

And it is the idea that politics is a game that turns so many people off politics.

There are too many serious issues to be dealt with in Wales for games to be played.

The chaos at the Assembly needs to be cleared up in the next few days.

It cannot be allowed to fester, particularly as the ultimate outcome could be another election in June that no party really wants.
