A NEWPORT carpet shop was ram raided in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Rob Santwris, of Rob Santwris World of Carpets in Lower Dock Street, said he was angry after discovering his shop had been broken into when he arrived at 7am.

CCTV footage shows a yellow car driving into the front of his shop at just before 4am.

The raiders made off with his laptop, worth £200, and the laptop case.

Mr Santwris told the Argus: “It’s crazy. Most of the stuff here is free samples of carpets and heavy stock out the back, so we never really worry about burglary.

“You would have to have a forklift truck to take anything.”

Mr Santwris, who organises a lot of charity fundraising, said it was his back up laptop which had been stolen.

“It was my touchscreen laptop and a flight case. The laptop was only in my shop for two weeks,” he said.

The shop’s front, including an antique-style wooden door, was damaged in the raid.

“The door was only put in in January,” he said. “You need a metal door really”.

He added: “You feel for people who come home and it’s their own personal stuff gone.

“I just feel angry. At the end of the day it’s my shop.”

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said they received a report around 8am today of a shop being broken into.

She said: “The offence happened sometime between 3:45pm on Tuesday, May 17 and 7.40am on Wednesday, May 18.

“Taken from the address was a touchscreen laptop.

“There was also damage to the property which includes broken doors, locks and windows.”

If anyone has any information regarding this offence or was in the area during this time they are asked to please call Gwent Police on 101 quoting log number 79 18/05/16.
