One of those who is set to settle in his saddle for the 140km event is former cancer sufferer and Duffryn High School headteacher Jon Wilson.
Her was diagnosed with lymphoma nine years ago, but overcame the disease and is riding this weekend’s race to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust, with friend Rob Gregory.
The pair are taking part in preparation for a London to Paris charity cycle later this year with five fellow teachers from the school.
Mr Wilson, 56, thought of the cross-channel challenge when diagnosed and persuaded the others to join him.
He said: “It's 80 miles of suffering but I’m looking forward to it. Having been a cancer you have an appreciation for what teenage suffers are going through.
“It’s a real motivation and you see things from a different perspective.”
