A NEWPORT-based community project has expressed its delight after finally becoming a registered charity.

1 Step at a Time is a community-run charity which donates essential items to vulnerable families being re-homed around Newport and Torfaen.

The charity, which has been running for nearly a year, provides items such as sofas, microwaves and even bedding to families who may not be able to afford them.

On Tuesday they received the news that they are now a registered charity and its co-founder said they are over the moon.

Co-founder of 1 Step at a Time Lee Williams said it has been a lot of hard work for them to get this far.

“Initially we were sort of paying from our own pockets and running on donations from Just Giving pages," he added.

“We put in £200 altogether of our money.”

Speaking of the finally becoming registered, Mr Williams said: “I’m just dead proud really. Really proud of everyone who helped.

“We have tried really hard to get to this. It hasn’t sunk in yet.”

Mr Williams and his fiancé Nicola Willmott founded the charity in June 2015, and have since brought in more staff to 1 Step at a Time.

The members of the charity run it from their homes, but have a warehouse for donations in Newport.

Many volunteers also help out at the charity, with Welsh government programme Communities First having previously worked alongside them.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported us,” said Mr Williams.
