A BASSALEG woman is taking part in seven gruelling fundraising activities to help her fiancé following his battle with throat cancer.

Emily Chinn, 45, and Rob Powell, 50, of Sunnybank, were due to get married this year until he received his diagnosis in December last year.

She started with the Newport Half Marathon in March, and completed the South Wales three peaks last month.

Today, she will spend the day doing a triathlon in Brecon.

Ms Chinn is appealing for people to donate £1 for each of the challenges.

She said: “I think I’m least prepared for the triathlon, and I fear it will be the most difficult as I have not had the time to prepared for it properly. Work commitments have meant that I couldn’t get out and about as much as I would like."

Mr Powell said he greatful for the efforts of his fiance.

“The support that Emily has given me has been really touching," he said. "Many people have wished me well, but she’s gone above and beyond.

“I am having a scan in July to find out how well the chemotherapy and radiotherapy has gone.

"I won’t know how successful it was for two years."

The couple have delayed their plans to tie the knot temporarily, seeing the wedding as something to look forward to.

Ms Chinn, said the June event would now be replaced by another triathlon, followed by obstacle courses in July, August and September.

At the beginning of the month, Mr Powell, along with Ms Chinn and her daughter, completed his first parkrun since his treatment finished.

“I just wanted to get around," he said. "I was a 25 minute runner but it took my 39 minutes. It was a great place to start from though."
