AN ANGRY customer threatened shop staff and tried to punch another shopper during a robbery at a Caldicot convenience store.

Staff at One Stop shop on Newport Road were left “shaken up” on Sunday when a man became aggressive after being told he could not pay for a scratch card and some sweets with a £50 note.

The customer, who police have described as white and with a shaved head, shoved the store manager into a corner and tried to punch another shopper, David Whitford, 39,

Mr Whitford, who lives near to the shop, said: “I had walked to the shop just to buy some eggs as I was doing Sunday dinner.

“My wife works in the shop as well, although she wasn’t there at the time, and I know a few members of staff there.

“A bloke in the shop, he had a £50 note on him and tried to pay for a packet of sweets and a scratch card but the staff said they couldn’t accept the note so he started getting funny.

“Even though we explained over and over again, he said you either accept the note or I’m just taking the stuff.

“So the manager then turned around and blocked the door off and said put the stock back or pay for it.

“He carried on acting the way he was. He moved in and put both hands on the manager and shoved her into the corner. I ran and grabbed hold of him to stop him getting to her.

“Then he threw a really, really good punch at me which I managed to duck.

“The rest of the staff then jumped in and kicked him out of the shop.”

Police were called at around 4.40pm on May 29 but the man had already left the scene.

Mr Whitford said: “In the shop at the time there was me, the manager Jen, a girl working behind the counter, an older woman and some school kids.

“The girl behind the counter, she was really shaken up. The manager Jen hurt her whole arm and leg so she was shaken up.

“I was shaken up to be honest because of the speed of the punch he threw at me. I was surprised I ducked.”
