HUNDREDS of cyclists donned their spotted outfits yesterday for the annual Dalmatian Bike Ride.

333 cyclists joined in the ride this year's event, which is organised by St David’s Hospice and Acorn Recruitment Ltd.

Riders could choose to take on a 40 or 20 mile route, which started and finished at The Priory in Caerleon.

Kris Broome, director of fundraising and lottery at St David's Hospice Care, said: “It went extremely well, we did have a couple of people fall off their bikes that were treated for injuries, but other than that it was fantastic.

“Next year we are hoping to get 500 riders taking part in the ride.”

The event was first set up five years ago in memory of John Dixon, who died from bowel cancer, and was organised by his son-in-law Dave Rees.

St David’s Hospice became involved in the event two years ago, and their committee help to set up the event every year.

So far £101,000 has been raised for the hospice, with the hospice hoping to add an extra £25,000 after they have counted up this year’s total amount.

Organiser Mr Rees, of St Julians, said: “The day was absolutely fantastic. It was the best Dalmatian Bike ride ever-the event just gets better and better every year-we're now planning for the next."

Mr Rees said some forty people had signed up on the day to take part and supporters had lined the route and turned up in their hundreds at the finish line.

"The support all the way was mind blowing. There must've been 300-400 people at the Priory at the finish. It was a sensational day from start to finish,” Mr Rees added.

Mr Broome has given thanks to everyone involved in this year’s ride.

He said: “St David’s Hospice would like to thank David Rees and his committee, along with Acorn, and we hope for more success with the Dalmatian Ride next year.”
