A FAMILY fun day will take place this Saturday to raise funds for an operation to give a Newport baby a new lease of life.

Toni Thomas, 37, from St Julians, is trying to raise £10,000 for her son Callum James, 14-months-old, to have an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Currently Callum is fed through a tube in his nostril but the operation would be to fit a peg to his stomach so he can receive food directly.

Callum has been diagnosed with reflux, global development delay, delayed visual impairment, hypertonia - which affects muscle tension and hypotonia - commonly known as floppy baby syndrome.

The operation is available on the NHS but Miss Thomas said there is an 18 month waiting list. She said day to day tasks are a daily battle to manage and the feeding tube to Callum's stomach would make the world of difference as he wouldn't be able to pull at the tube.

The money will also go towards funding a sensory nursery to help Callum.

The fun day takes place tomorrow at the Gaer Inn on Gaer Road from 2pm. There will be a bouncy castle, children's soft play area, Jumpin James children's entertainer, Disney Princess characters, face painting along with food by Perrie Dunwell of Big 'N' Tasty.

It will be £1 entry and there will be raffles tickets available on the day.

All the raffle prizes have been donated by businesses in Newport.
