ABERGAVENNY-based poet, author and playwright, Owen Sheers will appear at St Cadoc’s Church on July 1 as the opening attraction for this years Caerleon Festival.

Sheers, who recently appeared at The Hay Festival, comes with a long list of literary awards including Welsh Book of the Year, the Somerset Maugham Award, the Hay Festival Poetry Medal and the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award for his play The Two Worlds of Charlie F.

In 2011 Sheers wrote the script for The Passion, a 72-hour production in Port Talbot by National Theatre Wales, directed by and starring Newport-born Michael Sheen.

Also appearing at this event will be the Allegra Ladies Choir and the Merthyr poet, Mike Jenkins.

Caerleon Festival's literary theme will continue with the Lit on the Lawn event at the Priory Hotel on Saturday July 2.

Taking part will be authors Angela John, Peter Finch, Richard King, Holly Muller and Rachel Trezise.
