POLICE are appealing for information after a man armed with a silver handgun robbed a Newport betting shop last weekend.

The incident took place at the Betfred betting office at Caerleon Road at around 9.20pm on Saturday, June 18.

The man entered the store just before closing time armed with what is described as a silver handgun.

He demanded money from the staff in the store before leaving with a quantity of cash from the till.

The offender is being described as a white man, 5ft 9 to 5ft 11, medium to stocky build, possibly in his 40s with stubble around his chin.

The victim has described his accent as not being local or Welsh but as a Midlands accent.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said that while the incident was extremely distressing for staff at the store, no one was seriously injured.

The investigation into this incident is continuing and increased patrols are in the area at present to reassure the community.

Police are asking any witnesses or anyone who can help to identify the offender to come forward by calling 101 quoting incident number 612 18/06/16.
