FIREFIGHTERS were called to a series of refuse fires across Gwent on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Just after 6pm on June 25 crews were called to a disused groundsman’s house in Canning Street, Cwm, near Ebbw Vale, after a large pile of waste was set alight.

The crew used a breathing apparatus and a hosereel to put out the flames.

Another crew was called after a large pile of rubbish was set on fire in Cefn Golau, near Tredegar, at about 9.30am, damaging the back door of a house.

A hosereel was used to put out the fire.

At about 12.55am on Sunday morning a fire in another pile of waste – believed to have been started deliberately – spread to the fascia boards of a shop in Cardiff Road, Newport, causing heavy smoke logging inside the building.

Crews from Duffryn and Malpas used a hosereel jet, thermal cameras to fight the flames.

The Duffryn crew was also called to a refuse fire at a block of flats in Buchan Close, Newport, at about 2.30am on June 26. The used a jet to put out the fire.
